Preventing & Treating Surgical Scars

Some patients can be hesitant to undergo surgery because of the potential for developing surgical scars. Scars are part of the body’s natural healing process, and form as a result of the biologic wound repair process inherent in skin and tissues. Most trauma to the skin, even minor wounds, can result in scarring. Given that the way scars form has as much to do with a person’s genetic makeup as it does surgical precision, even the most meticulous technique isn’t enough for some patients to form the ideal thin, flat scars like others do.

For these patients, it is usually because the body produces too much collagen, and scars develop that are raised or appear darker in pigment. Raised scars are called keloid scars or hypertrophic scars, and are more common in those with darker skin tones and younger people. Scars can also develop with a pitted or sunken appearance. This kind of scarring occurs when the underlying structures supporting the skin (for example, fat or muscle) are damaged or lost.

Fortunately for his patients, Dr. Reis offers a simple yet highly effective pre- and postoperative skincare scar regimen that optimizes procedure outcomes and can dramatically reduce the visible appearance of surgical scars. Additionally, Dr. Reis offers CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatments for areas with suboptimal scars to significantly improve their overall appearance.

The Corrective Effects of Fractional Laser

Diminish The Appearance of Scars With CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is an effective way to reduce the appearance of suboptimal surgical scars. Laser Skin Resurfacing works by sending out pulses of high-intensity energy that heats and vaporizes thin layers of skin, allowing new, fresh skin to grow over the treated area for a dramatically improved appearance in tone and texture. A dual benefit of Laser Skin Resurfacing is that the heat promotes collagen production, stimulating skin in the treatment area to heal with a more youthful, radiant appearance.
